It is home to a large population of wild cutthroat trout and has a unique geology, with underwater geysers, hot springs, and deep canyons. The lake's ecosystem is supported by nutrient- and mineral-rich submarine fountains, which support plant and animal communities, including bacterial mats, sponges, and earthworms. The lake has a rich history, with evidence of human presence dating back to pre-historic times, and was an important location for Native American tribes and early European explorers
