What to expect

Midway Geyser Basin is a small but spectacular area that features some of the largest hot springs in the world. The Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone's largest hot spring, is approximately 200-330 feet in diameter and over 121 feet deep. The area is also home to Excelsior Geyser, a 200 x 300 foot crater that constantly discharges more than 4,000 gallons of water per minute into the Firehole River. The hot springs in the area are inhabited by microscopic organisms called thermophiles, which thrive in the extreme temperatures and create a variety of colors. Visitors can explore the area via a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk and should exercise caution when navigating the hydrothermal areas, staying on designated trails and supervising children at all times
