What to expect

The Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. It is located in the Midway Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The spring is approximately 370 feet in diameter and 160 feet deep, with a discharge of 560 US gallons per minute of 160 °F water. The spring's vibrant colors are created by microbial mats of thermophilic bacteria that thrive in the hot, chemical-rich water. The colors range from green to red, depending on the temperature and ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids. The center of the pool is a deep blue color due to the intrinsic color of water. Visitors can view the spring from a safe distance on the boardwalks and designated trails, but are advised to exercise caution and stay on the designated paths to avoid burns from the hot water and to protect the delicate ecosystem. The spring is a popular destination for its unique beauty and scientific significance, and is considered a must-see attraction in Yellowstone National Park
