The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation and marks the northern extent of Elliott Bay. It was built in 1881 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The lighthouse is a main feature of Seattle's Discovery Park, which is a 534-acre park that contains 11.81 miles of walking trails, forests, beaches, prairies, and bluffs. The park is one of the best places in the city to view wildlife, especially birds and marine mammals. The shoreline is accessible, and the park provides excellent views of Puget Sound
