Upheaval Dome is a unique geological feature located in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. It is a circular structure, approximately three miles across, where rock layers are dramatically deformed. The dome is surrounded by a downwarp in the rock layers, called a syncline. There are two main theories about the formation of Upheaval Dome: the Salt Dome Theory and the Impact Crater Theory. The Salt Dome Theory states that a thick layer of salt underlies the area and has flowed up through the rock layers, creating the dome. The Impact Crater Theory proposes that a meteorite hit the area, creating a crater that was later filled with rocks. Visitors can hike to two overlooks, which offer spectacular views of the dome. The first overlook is a short, steep hike of 0.6 miles, while the second overlook is a 1.2-mile hike. The trails are considered moderate in difficulty and offer a glimpse into the unique geology of the area
