Waugh Drive Bridge

Bridge Houston, Texas, United States

What to expect

The Waugh Drive Bridge is home to a large colony of Mexican free-tailed bats, with an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 bats residing beneath the bridge. The bats emerge from the bridge at sunset, creating a spectacular display as they fly out to feed on insects. The best viewing locations are from the viewing platform at the southeast corner of the bayou bank, the northeast bank of the bayou, and on the east rail sidewalk of the bridge itself. The bridge is located in Buffalo Bayou Park, less than two miles west of Downtown Houston, and is managed by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership. The park offers boat trips on the bayou, which culminate in watching the bat flight from below. The viewing area is ADA accessible, and 'Bat Chats' are available on Friday nights from March through October, where visitors can learn more about the bats and their habitat
