What to expect

Santa Elena Canyon is a scenic canyon located in Big Bend National Park, Texas. The canyon has the tallest cliffs forming the canyon wall, up to 1,500 feet, and is considered one of the most dramatically beautiful areas in the park. The canyon can be explored by paddling upstream from the Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead, and then returning back downstream, or by taking a guided raft or canoe trip. The scenery is spectacular, with opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking in shady side canyons, and camping on spacious sandbars. However, there are some safety concerns, such as the risk of encountering illegal border crossings and the need to be aware of wildlife, including snakes. Visitors should also be prepared for the hot and dry climate, and bring plenty of water, food, and sun protection. The Santa Elena Canyon Trail is a short nature trail that enters the canyon, but it may be impassable due to flooding during the rainy season
