What to expect

The Gibbes Museum of Art is a premier collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston. The museum tells the story of the South's complex history and symbolism through past and present works that speak to modern-day themes, as well as Charleston's pre–Civil War heritage. The museum features a collection of over 10,000 works of fine art, including works by artists with connections to Charleston. The museum's building is a Beaux Arts style layout, with a Tiffany-style dome, Doric columns, and pediment-capped windows and doors. The entire ground floor of the museum is admission-free, and it includes classrooms, artist studios, lecture and event spaces, and a museum store. The museum also has a garden, part of Charleston's historic Gateway Walk, which is a great place for families to explore
