What to expect

Ellis Island is a historic island in New York Harbor that was once the busiest immigrant inspection and processing station in the United States. From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million immigrants passed through the island, and it is estimated that as many as two-fifths of Americans may be descended from these immigrants. The island is now home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, which tells the story of the immigrant experience and offers a world-class exhibit of artifacts and interactive displays. Visitors can tour the Main Building of the former immigration complex and explore the island's historic sites, including the Wall of Honor. The island is also home to the American Family Immigration History Center, which contains a searchable database of passenger manifests for Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1820 and 1954. Audio tours are available in 12 languages, and a family-friendly tour is also available
