Institute Woods

The Institute Woods is a 300-acre tract of deciduous forest with a mix of virgin forest and marshlands, offering a unique habitat for various bird species, particularly during songbird migration seasons. The woods have a grid-like trail system, with the old Trolley Tracks Trail at the northernmost part, and several north-south trails that lead downhill to the Stony Brook flood plain. The area is also home to a variety of trees, including aspen, gray birch, beech, oak, hickory, dogwood, sweet gum, and red maple, which provide habitat for summer breeding and spring and fall migrating bird species. The woods are open to the public and offer opportunities for walking, biking, and bird watching, making it a great place to visit with family and friends
