What to expect

The Mount Washington Cog Railway is a mountain-climbing cog railway that climbs Mount Washington in New Hampshire, United States. It is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway and the only one currently operating in North America. The railway uses a Marsh rack system and both steam and biodiesel-powered locomotives to carry tourists to the top of the mountain. At the summit, clear weather provides spectacular panoramic views from Quebec to the Atlantic Ocean. The summit is home to the Mount Washington Weather Observatory, one of the world's most important weather laboratories. The railway also features an interactive Cog Railway Museum, a cafeteria, and gift shops. In the winter, trains run up to Waumbek Station, offering spectacular snowy views and complimentary hot refreshments
