Avalanche Lake

Lake West Glacier, Montana, United States

What to expect

Avalanche Lake is a beautiful destination for families to visit, offering a moderately challenging 5.9-mile out-and-back hike with stunning lake views, beautiful trees, and scenic surroundings. The hike begins at the Trail of the Cedars Trailhead and winds its way through old-growth cedars and hemlock forest, featuring spectacular scenery and glimpses of birds and wildlife. The trail gradually climbs along Avalanche Creek and flattens out once you reach the lake, where you can enjoy the incredibly clear blue waters and surrounding mountains. The area is known for bear activity, so it's essential to be prepared and know how to respond during wildlife encounters. The Trail of the Cedars section is wheelchair accessible, but the Avalanche Trail portion is not suitable for visitors using wheelchairs, mobility equipment, or strollers
