What to expect

Bar Island Trail is a 3.1-km out-and-back trail that can be completed in approximately 45 minutes. The trail is considered easy and is suitable for families with children. The trail starts with a unique sandbar crossing at low tide, which provides opportunities for investigating small tide pools. Once on the island, the trail gradually ascends through the forest on an old road, offering beautiful views of Bar Harbor and Frenchman Bay. Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a leash. The trail is open year-round and is a popular spot for hiking and off-road driving. Visitors should be aware of the tides and plan their visit accordingly, as the land bridge to the island is only accessible 1.5 hours before and after low tide
