The Shawnee National Forest is a United States National Forest located in southern Illinois, covering approximately 289,000 acres. It features oak-hickory forests, wetlands, grassy openlands, canyons, and unique geological formations. The forest offers many outdoor activities, including hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and fishing. There are over 500 wildlife species, including 48 mammals, 237 birds, 52 reptiles, 57 amphibians, and 109 species of fish. The forest has several scenic drives, including the Ohio River National Scenic Byway, and many campgrounds. Visitors can enjoy the diverse plant life, which ranges from sun-loving species to those that grow in dense shade, and explore the forest's many rivers and streams
