It was founded in 1930 by local businessman Max Adler and is located on the northeastern tip of Northerly Island on Lake Michigan. The planetarium features three theaters, space science exhibitions, including the Gemini 12 space capsule, and a collection of antique scientific instruments and print materials. Visitors can explore exhibits such as 'Mission Moon', 'What is a Planet?', and 'Our Solar System', which offer interactive experiences and hands-on activities. The planetarium also hosts the Doane Observatory, a research-active public observatory, and offers live shows like 'Destination Solar System' and 'Skywatch Live'.
