What to expect

The Sulpher Pots and Steam Vents, located in Hawaii National Park, are a unique geological feature where steam vents and sulfur banks can be observed. The steam vents, such as those found at Wahinekapu (Steaming Bluff), emit hot water vapor that rises from cracks in the earth, created by groundwater seeping down to rocks heated by magma deep underground. The sulfur banks, such as Ha'akulamanu, emit volcanic gases, including sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which react to produce pure sulfur. The area is also home to a 2.3-km loop trail that offers dramatic views of steam vents and sulfur deposits, with interpretive signage available along the way. The trail is considered easy and is suitable for hiking and walking, but may not be suitable for visitors with mobility issues due to the gravel and wooden boardwalk surface
