What to expect

The Halema'uma'u Crater Trail is a moderately challenging hike that descends 425 feet through a rain forest to a panoramic view on the floor of Kīlauea caldera. The trail offers stunning views and a variety of landscapes, from lush forest to lava fields. It's a great place for birding and hiking, but dogs are not allowed. The trail is steep, uneven, and occasionally narrow, making it less suitable for families with young children or strollers
