What to expect

Uēaloha, also known as Byron Ledge, is a trail that provides excellent views of Puʻupuaʻi cinder cone and sporadic vistas of Kīlauea caldera. The trail is moderately challenging and is 1.1 miles one-way from the Devastation Trailhead to the intersection with the Kīlauea Iki trail. It is also accessible via a 1.3-mile hike on Halemaʻumaʻu Trail near Volcano House. The trail explores a variety of scenery, including desert and lush rainforest with beautiful Ōhi'a trees and large fern trees. There are several overlooks offering fantastic views of two volcano craters. The trail is open year-round and is a popular spot for hiking and walking. However, dogs are not allowed on the trail, and visitors should be cautious of endangered nēnē (Hawaiian geese) in the area
