What to expect

Fort Pulaski National Monument is a historic fort located on Cockspur Island, between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. The fort was built to protect the port of Savannah and played a significant role in the Civil War. It was the site of the first use of rifled artillery in military history, which rendered brick fortifications obsolete. The fort was used as a prison of war camp and a safe haven for formerly enslaved people. Visitors can explore the fort and learn about its history through interpretive programs. The monument includes most of Cockspur Island and the adjacent McQueens Island, covering an area of 5,623 acres
