Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is a unique geological formation located in Islamorada, Florida. The park features a beautiful exposure of the Key Largo Limestone, a white to light gray, moderately hard limestone composed of coral heads encased in a matrix of sand-sized grains. Visitors can walk along 8-foot-high quarry walls to see cross sections of the ancient coral and learn about the quarry and its operation, an important part of Florida's 20th-century history. The park also has five short self-guided trails, picnic tables, and a visitor center with educational exhibits. The site was once a quarry used by Henry Flagler in the early 1900s to build the Overseas Railroad, and later to produce decorative stone called Keystone. Today, it is a protected area that showcases the natural beauty of the island and its fascinating geological history
