What to expect

Hanging Lake is a Colorado treasure and a rare example of a travertine geological formation located in the heart of Glenwood Canyon. The 1.2 mile trail is steep, rigorous and rocky but rewarding, featuring awe-inspiring scenery and gentle waterfalls. The trail follows multiple switchbacks up steep terrain, ending on a boardwalk around the lake. The lake edge is built up from dissolved carbonates which are deposited on the shore as the water flows over. Visitors must navigate a steep trail up Dead Horse Creek Canyon, over footbridges, through light and dark contrasts, and beside remnants of the forest fire, to reach this special place
