Moaning Cavern

Moaning Cavern is a solutional cave located in Calaveras County, California, near Vallecito. It is developed in marble of the Calaveras Formation and features a spacious vertical shaft 165 feet tall, which is descended by a combination of stairs and a unique 100-foot-high spiral staircase. The cave is home to the largest single cave chamber open to the public in California, with a massive room that reaches over 180 feet before funneling into smaller passageways. The cave offers guided tours, including the Spiral Tour and the Expedition Tour, which takes visitors through narrow passageways and requires crawling on hands and knees.
