Fort Funston is a great place for outdoor activities, featuring 200-foot high sandy bluffs on San Francisco's southwest coast with reliably wild winds, making it one of the premier hang-gliding spots in the country. The area has a network of trails, making it ideal for hiking, horseback riding, and dog walking. The loop trails are paved and wheelchair-accessible, but the trails down to the beach are not. Visitors should be aware that the surf and undertow are extremely dangerous, and the hike down to the beach and back up can be steep and strenuous. The area is also home to a unique sand-dune landscape and is a nesting site for the threatened Bank Swallow species. Families should keep a close eye on their kids due to the dangerous surf and steep trails
