It was named after the headland of Dana Point, which was in turn named after Richard Henry Dana Jr., author of 'Two Years Before the Mast'. The city has a rich history, with the area being home to the Acjachemen village site of Toovannga, and later becoming a popular port for ships involved in the hide trade.
