It was founded on June 3, 1770, by Father Junipero Serra and is one of the most authentically restored Catholic mission churches in California. The mission is the final resting place of Father Serra and features a stunning church, museum, and beautiful gardens. It is also home to California's first library, which was started in 1778. The mission has a rich history, having served as the headquarters of the Alta California Mission System from 1771 to 1815, 1819-1824, and 1827-1830. Today, it is an active parish and a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into California's rich history and cultural heritage
