The Angeles National Forest is a national forest located in the San Gabriel Mountains and Sierra Pelona Mountains, primarily within Los Angeles County in southern California. The forest covers a total of 655,387 acres, protecting large areas of the San Gabriel Mountains and Sierra Pelona Mountains. It is located just north of the densely inhabited metropolitan area of Greater Los Angeles. The forest contains five nationally designated wilderness areas and is home to a variety of flora and fauna. The climate in the forest varies, with warm summers and mild winters, and the area receives an average of 22.28 inches of precipitation per year
