South Mountain Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the United States, covering over 16,000 acres of native desert vegetation. The park features 58 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, as well as a scenic roadway that takes visitors to the highest accessible point, Dobbins Lookout, which offers panoramic views of the city. The park is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including the Elephant tree and a high density of chuckwallas. Visitors can explore the park's many trails, take a guided horseback tour, or visit the South Mountain Environmental Education Center to learn about the park's natural history and conservation efforts. The park also hosts a 'Silent Sunday' event, where the main roadway is closed to motor vehicle traffic, allowing visitors to enjoy non-motorized activities such as walking, cycling, and jogging
