York City Walls are a historic feature of the city, with 3.4 kilometers of surviving masonry, making them the longest medieval town walls in England. The walls offer a splendid elevated walk around the city, with good views of many important buildings and features like arrow-slits, musket loops, sculptures, and masons' marks. The walls are free to access on foot and are suitable for families to visit with their children. However, dogs are not allowed on the City Walls, except for assistance dogs, and wheelchairs and pushchairs are not practical on the narrow wall-walk. A walk around the walls takes about 2 hours and offers an opportunity to see the main features of the walls, including four main 'bars' or fortified gateways, two smaller gateways, and one postern, a small gateway defended by a tower
