What to expect

The Shell Grotto is an astonishing subterranean passageway shell grotto, consisting of a winding passage about 8 feet high and 70 feet in length, terminating in a rectangular room. The grotto is entirely underground and features 4.6 million shells arranged as images and patterns, including gods and goddesses, and trees of life made from the shells of whelks, mussels, and oysters. The purpose of the structure is unknown, and various hypotheses date its construction to any time in the past 3,000 years. The grotto has a modern museum and gift shop attached to it. However, due to its nature, it is not accessible to wheelchair users, and the terrain inside the passage is uneven, sloped, and narrow in places, with low lighting
