It has been a popular escape from the city for over 200 years, with many notable figures such as C.S. Lewis and Constable drawing inspiration from it. The heath features swimming ponds, a lido, playgrounds, and a training track, as well as being home to a variety of wildlife. It is a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation and part of Kenwood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The heath is managed by the City of London Corporation and is a popular spot for recreation and leisure activities
