Old Man of Coniston

Mountain Coniston, England, United Kingdom

What to expect

The Old Man of Coniston is a fell in the Furness Fells of the Lake District in Cumbria, England, and is the highest point of the historic county of Lancashire. It stands over the village of Coniston and can be seen from many of its streets. The area around Coniston, particularly on the slopes of The Old Man, were once a hive of heavy industry, with mining for slate and copper. The fell is popular with tourists and fell-walkers, with a number of well-marked paths to the summit. The mountain has also seen extensive copper and slate mining activity for eight hundred years, and the remains of abandoned mines and spoil tips are a significant feature of the north-east slopes. The summit offers wonderful views over the surrounding fells and east over Coniston Water. Families can enjoy a walk to the summit via the Tourist Path, which passes through a fascinating landscape of old mine workings and offers a perfect stopping point at Low Water, a lovely tarn at the base of the final climb
