What to expect

The Tissington Trail is a 13-mile traffic-free trail for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, running from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay. The trail follows the former railway line between Buxton and Ashbourne, which was opened in 1899 and closed around 70 years later. The trail has a firm crushed-limestone surface, making it suitable for cyclists, walkers, and wheelchair users. It offers good views, but can be exposed in poor weather. Along the trail, there are several villages, including Tissington, a picture-book village with beautiful cottages, a noble old hall, and a fine church. The trail also passes by the village of Thorpe, with its summit, Thorpe Cloud, and the village of Hartington, home to Hartington Hall, now a YHA hostel. The trail ends at Parsley Hay, where there are facilities, including a cycle hire
