What to expect
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, is a magnificent structure of the Ottoman Empire, located in the heart of Istanbul. It was built between 1609 and 1617 and is known for its six minarets, many domes and semidomes, and stunning interior decorated with over 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles from İznik. The mosque can hold up to 10,000 worshipers and is a functioning mosque today, attracting a large number of tourists. The complex includes a hospital, a madrasah, an imaret, a primary school, and a tomb for the members of the royal family. Visitors can enter the mosque through the south entrance, and the west entrance is the most superbly decorated. The mosque is covered with carpet, and Muslims take off their shoes before entering to keep the space clean. The interior walls feature beautiful Arabic calligraphic examples, and the mosque's design gives a feeling of serenity, making it a must-visit destination for families and travelers alike
