Lac de Lauenen

Lake Lauenen, Bern, Switzerland

What to expect

Lac de Lauenen, also known as Lake Lauenen, is a mountain lake located in the Louwene Valley in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. The lake is situated at an altitude of 1,381 m and is surrounded by moorland meadows, reeds, clumps of heather, and groups of dark fir trees. It is a paradise for water fowl, with moorhens and mallards often visiting the area. The lake has been designated a natural reserve since the 1970s, along with the entire valley and its landmark, the Geltenschuss and the Gelten Falls. The Gelten River crashes across several levels of cliffs, forming eddies that have created deep holes in the rock. The area is also home to mountain cabins, such as the Geltenhütte and the Wildhornhütte, which are ideal destinations for hikers. In summer, climbers can be found on the rock faces, while in winter, the area is popular for skiers and snowshoe hikers
