Appenzell Innerrhoden is a demicanton located in the northeast of Switzerland, at the north foot of the Säntis Peak. It has an area of 172 square kilometers and is divided into five districts. The canton is essentially located in the Alpine foothills of the Alpstein massif, culminating at the Säntis. Appenzell Innerrhoden is the smallest canton of Switzerland by population and the second smallest by area. The population is German-speaking and predominantly Roman Catholic. The canton is largely pastoral with extensive cattle breeding and dairying, and tourism and services have largely replaced traditional industries in economic importance
