Tanum's rock carvings

Archaeological site Tanumshede, Vastra Gotaland County, Sweden

What to expect

The Rock Carvings in Tanum are a unique artistic achievement, featuring thousands of images carved into the smooth rocks of the landscape. The carvings, which date back to the Bronze Age, depict a range of motifs, including humans, animals, weapons, boats, and other symbols. The area is home to approximately 600 rock-carving sites, with four main sites - Vitlycke, Aspeberget, Litsleby, and Fossum - that are easily accessible and feature information boards. The Vitlycke site is particularly notable, with nearly 300 carvings of various scenes, people, and objects. The rock carvings are not only a testament to the life and beliefs of people living in the Nordic region during the Bronze Age but also offer a unique glimpse into the cultural and historical significance of the area
