What to expect

Vaxholms Kastell, also known as Vaxholm Fortress, is a historic fortification located on the island of Vaxholmen in the Stockholm archipelago. The fortress was originally constructed by Gustav Vasa in 1548 to defend Stockholm against shipborne attacks from the east. It has a rich history, having been attacked by the Danes in 1612 and the Russian navy in 1719, with both attacks being repulsed. The current structure dates from 1833-1863 and features a unique design inspired by French engineers. Today, the fortress is home to the Vaxholm Fortress Museum, which showcases the history of the fortress and the Swedish military. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibitions, including the 'Animals at War' exhibit, and experience the life of the fortress in the 1890s. The fortress is a great place to visit for those interested in history, military architecture, and the Stockholm archipelago
