What to expect
Lake Mälaren is the third-largest freshwater lake in Sweden, located in the Stockholm County. The lake has a surface area of 1,140 km2 and a maximum depth of 64 m. It is a popular destination for families, with many islands to explore, including Adelsö, which is home to the Viking Age settlements Birka and Hovgården, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island of Adelsö has a mixture of pine-clad rocky hills and moraine ridges, with many edible mushrooms and fruit to forage. The lake's surface is about 0.7 m above sea level, and its water level has been affected by post-glacial rebound. The area has a rich history, with many archaeological sites and historical landmarks to visit
