What to expect

Vadstena is a historic town with a rich cultural heritage, featuring well-preserved buildings from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The town's history is closely connected to the convent founded by Saint Bridget of Sweden in 1384, which was the first and largest convent of the Bridgettine Order. Today, visitors can explore the Vadstena Abbey Church, one of the largest medieval churches in Scandinavia, and the Vadstena Castle, a 16th-century fortress that has been well-preserved. The town also features the oldest city hall in Sweden, built in the early 15th century. Things to do in Vadstena: 7 tips in one of Sweden's cutest towns
This family's experience:

Activities: We took a stroll in the monastery area. "For a first-time visitor, you should aim for the city's monastery area" to get an insight into how Vadstena has made a name for itself over the centuries. We saw Vadstena Klosterkyrka, Sancta Birgitta Klostermuseum, Pilgrimscentrum and Örtagården

Highlights: We enjoyed seeing the important and interesting part of Sweden's history. It has "ancestors from its former glory days as an important hub as a monastery town". The area still is "an appreciated pilgrimage destination, but also a popular tourist town" ✨
