What to expect
Hikkaduwa Beach, located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, is a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beaches, coral reef sanctuary, and vibrant nightlife. The beach is divided into three main areas: the Sri Lankan town, the tourist area, and the upmarket area of Thiranagama. It is famous for its surfing, with thousands of surfers visiting between October and April. The beach also features a coral sanctuary with approximately 70 varieties of multi-colored corals. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the Hikkaduwa Beach Festival, which takes place in July and August, featuring local and international DJs, musicians, and dancers. The area is also home to various species of birds, including herons, sandpipers, and kingfishers, as well as the endangered purple-faced langur monkey. The nearby Tsunami Honganji Viharaya, a 30-meter-high Big Buddha statue, is a notable attraction and a reminder of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The beach offers a range of activities, including snorkeling, sunbathing, and exploring the local marine life, making it an ideal destination for both relaxation and adventure

Visiting the south of Sri Lanka, from beach to safari, what to do?
Activities: We saw the famous turtles on the beach, but were disappointed by the lack of respect shown by some visitors. We also saw a python being held by a man who was offering photos with it. The beach was full of cars, which was a bit off-putting
Highlights: We enjoyed seeing the other animals on the beach and the beautiful ocean, but the overcrowding and lack of respect for the animals were a negative ✨
