The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a captive breeding and conservation institute for wild Asian elephants. It is home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world, with around 70 elephants, including males and females from 3 generations. The orphanage was established to care and protect orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. Visitors can view the care and daily routine of the elephants, such as bottle-feeding of elephant calves, feeding of all other elephants, and bathing in the Ma Oya River. The elephants are fed in their stalls and are herded about 0.5 km twice a day to drink and be bathed in the river. At night, the females are individually chained in stalls, while adult males do some light work such as transporting feed

Activities: We visited the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and afterwards we tried to cross the road where there are a few shops and a couple of restaurants overlooking a riverfront where the elephants come to bathe
Highlights: The family was excited to see the elephants, but the experience was marred by the aggressive behavior of the guards ✨
