Kandy Lake

Lake Kandy, Central, Sri Lanka

What to expect

Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is an artificial lake located in the heart of Kandy city, Sri Lanka. The lake was built in the early 19th century by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and features a manmade island at its center, which was used by the king's harem and connected to the royal palace complex via a secret passageway. The lake's perimeter has a shady path that is over three kilometers long, offering scenic views of the surrounding hills. The lake itself covers an area of more than 6000 square meters and has a maximum depth of around 18.5 meters. Visitors can stroll or jog around the lake, and the surrounding area offers great photography opportunities, with many species of birds and creatures inhabiting the lake, such as fish, turtles, and Asian water monitors. The lake is a protected area, with fishing banned, and its tranquil atmosphere makes it a popular spot for those visiting the nearby Temple of the Tooth
