Kandy is a major city located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy from 1469 to 1818, under the Kingdom of Kandy. The city is situated in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and the capital of the Central Province. Kandy is the home of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. The city has a thriving food scene, with a growth in the number of restaurants starting to provide authentic Kandyan home cooking. The Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, located 6 km outside the city, are a peaceful haven and home to over 4,000 plant species. Kandy Lake, created as an additional feature for the Temple of the Tooth, is a calm oasis fronting the temple, where visitors can take a break from the bustle of the city by walking the path encircling the lake
