What to expect

Portbou is a town in the Alt Empordà county, in the Province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It has a population of 1077 people and is located near the French border in the Costa Brava region. The town has a long seafaring tradition and offers an attractive natural setting, as well as numerous leisure possibilities along its coast. Its historic quarter is dominated by the Neo-Gothic church of Santa María and is surrounded by coastal hills and steep slopes covered with thick vegetation, followed by tranquil, secluded beaches and coves. The town is also known for its railway station, which is one of the most important buildings in town and a major transport junction. Portbou is also where German philosopher Walter Benjamin committed suicide and was buried in 1940, and there is a monument in his honor, by Dani Karavan
