The mountain is home to the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary. The municipality of Monistrol de Montserrat is situated at the foot of the mountain and includes the southern two-thirds of the massif. The town is connected to the monastery by the Montserrat Rack Railway and has a population of around 3,000 people. Montserrat is a popular destination for hiking and climbing, with several trails and routes available for visitors.
