Itálica is an ancient Roman city located in Santiponce, Spain. The city was founded in 206 BC by Roman general Scipio as a colony for his Italic veterans and named after them. Itálica played an important strategic role in the Roman Empire, and its inhabitants enjoyed a period of splendor with the construction of new public buildings, such as the amphitheater, houses with floors decorated with mosaics, and broad streets. The city is also the birthplace of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian.
