What to expect

The Sterkfontein Caves are a set of limestone caves of special interest in paleoanthropology located in Gauteng province, about 40 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The caves are regarded as the world's richest hominid fossil site, with thousands of discoveries made there since excavation at the location began in the mid 1930s. The site is home to numerous early hominin remains, including the famous 'Mrs. Ples' and 'Little Foot' fossils. The caves are deep and consist of some narrow pathways, and visitors can take guided tours to explore the site. The Sterkfontein Caves are also home to numerous wild African species and are situated in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site
