Rio Camuy Cave Park

Cave Camuy, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico

What to expect

The Río Camuy Cave Park is a cave system located in Puerto Rico's northwestern region, covering three towns: Camuy, Hatillo, and Lares. The park features a large network of natural limestone caves and underground waterways carved out by the Río Camuy, the third-largest underground river in the world. The cave system was officially discovered in 1958, but archaeological evidence shows that it was explored hundreds of years ago by the island's indigenous inhabitants. Over 10 miles of caverns, 220 caves, and 17 entrances to the Camuy cave system have been mapped, but only a small part of the complex is open to the public. The park offers guided tours of some of the caves and sinkholes, including Clara Cave, which is the main attraction. The cave features stunning formations, stalactites, and stalagmites, and visitors can see the entrance from the roof of the Sumidero de Empalme sinkhole. The park also features other attractions, such as the Spiral Cave and Sinkhole and the Tri-Towns Sinkhole. Visitors must be in good physical condition to walk into the caves and sinkholes, and the park provides scenic boardwalks and observation platforms for viewing the caves and the Camuy River
