What to expect
The Museu do Traje is a museum located in the historic centre of Viana do Castelo, showcasing the traditional costumes of the region. The museum is housed in a building with architectural characteristics of the 'Estado Novo' style, which was previously used as a branch of the Bank of Portugal. The museum's collection includes exhibits on the production of handmade garments, as well as permanent exhibitions on the theme of Viana's traditional dress and ethnography. Activities: We visited the Museu do Traje, which is installed in an old bank. We saw different traditional costumes of the region, each with its own social and cultural significance. We also saw regional jewelry in the old bank vault
Highlights: We enjoyed seeing the unique designs of the dresses and the regional jewelry. The guide told us about the jewelry received by girls at different ages, from the first ornament at 8 days old, called "aïe", to the elaborate engagement jewelry. We also saw some pastries ✨
