Rua Augusta

Street Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal

What to expect

Rua Augusta is one of Lisbon’s main commercial streets in the Baixa area, stretching from the riverside Terreiro do Paço to the Rossio. The street is pedestrianised and features numerous fashion retailers, restaurants, and cafés. The Rua Augusta Arch, a triumphal arch, is located at the beginning of the street and offers panoramic views of the Baixa grid and the River Tejo. The arch is adorned with statues of historical figures, including Vasco da Gama, Viriato, and the Marquês de Pombal, and features a Latin inscription honoring the ancestors. Visitors can take a lift to a small exhibition centre behind the clock and climb a spiral staircase to the viewpoint for stunning views of the city
